What should you know about labial milia?

Milia form when keratin becomes trapped just beneath the surface of the skin. They often feel firm and appear white, pale yellow, or skin-coloured. On the labia, several other conditions can resemble milia, including blocked glands, irritation, follicle problems, or infections, so appearance alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

Milia are different from typical whiteheads because they are not simply open or clogged pores. They may remain stable for a while and often do not hurt. A clinician can examine the area while protecting privacy and can recommend testing if the appearance or symptoms suggest another cause.

Wash gently with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free cleanser if needed. Avoid squeezing, piercing, scraping, bleaching products, harsh exfoliants, and home extraction tools; these can cause infection, scarring, or a small wound in delicate skin.

If the bumps persist or bother you, arrange a dermatology assessment. Depending on the diagnosis and location, a clinician may remove an individual lesion with a sterile technique or discuss a prescribed topical treatment. Do not apply retinoids or other active products to vulval skin unless a clinician has directed you how to use them.

Arrange an examination if a bump is painful, itchy, rapidly changing, bleeding, ulcerated, clustered with blisters, or associated with unusual discharge. Seek prompt care for fever, spreading redness, marked swelling, or difficulty passing urine. These features are not typical of a simple milia cyst.

Ask whether the lesion is consistent with milia, whether an infection or another vulval condition needs excluding, if removal is appropriate, and which cleanser or prescription product is safe for the exact area involved.
