What should you know about LABA therapy for asthma?

LABA therapy uses a long-acting bronchodilator to help keep asthma airways open, usually alongside an inhaled corticosteroid. It is a maintenance treatment, not a substitute for a reliever inhaler during a sudden attack. Combination inhalers can simplify the plan, but the exact inhaler and schedule should match your prescription.

A LABA relaxes muscle around the airways for an extended period, which can reduce nighttime symptoms, wheezing, cough, and chest tightness when asthma remains troublesome. It does not treat airway inflammation by itself. For that reason, using a LABA alone for asthma is generally unsafe; the anti-inflammatory part of the plan matters.

Use the inhaler on the prescribed schedule and check your technique with a clinician or pharmacist. Keep track of reliever use, nighttime waking, exercise symptoms, and missed doses. Do not add a second long-acting inhaler or stop the steroid component because you feel better. Your asthma action plan should explain what to do when symptoms increase.

Follow your action plan and seek urgent help if breathing is rapidly worsening, speaking is difficult, lips look blue or grey, or the reliever is not giving the expected improvement. Arrange a review when wheezing, cough, or chest tightness repeatedly breaks through treatment, or when you need the reliever more often than instructed.

Ask why a LABA is being added, which inhaler contains the steroid, and how to distinguish maintenance from reliever use. Check your inhaler technique, the missed-dose plan, possible tremor or palpitations, and the date for reviewing control.
