IUD for adenomyosis

Adenomyosis occurs when tissue similar to the womb lining grows into the muscular wall of the uterus. A hormonal IUD releases progestogen inside the uterus, which can make the lining thinner and lessen menstrual bleeding. By reducing the local response to hormonal cycling, it may also ease cramping for some people.

Improvement may take time, and irregular spotting or cramps can occur after insertion. The device does not shrink every enlarged uterus or address every source of pelvic pain. Heavy periods, painful periods, or pelvic pain may have another cause as well, so the treatment plan should match your symptoms, examination, fertility plans, and medical history.

Discuss the hormonal coil with a gynaecologist, including insertion discomfort, possible early bleeding changes, contraception needs, and how progress will be reviewed. Keep a simple record of bleeding and pain before and after insertion. Tell the clinician about unexplained bleeding, infection symptoms, pregnancy possibility, uterine shape concerns, or a wish to conceive soon. If symptoms remain troublesome, ask about medicines and procedures such as endometrial ablation, uterine artery embolisation, or hysterectomy.

Get urgent help for severe pelvic pain, heavy bleeding, fever, faintness, a positive pregnancy test with pain or bleeding, or a device that has partly or completely come out. Contact the service that inserted it if the strings change markedly or you develop persistent pain, unusual discharge, or symptoms that are worsening rather than settling.

Ask whether your symptoms fit adenomyosis, whether the uterus is suitable for an IUD, how long to wait before judging benefit, and what alternatives preserve or end fertility. Clarify the follow-up plan and which bleeding or pain changes need review.
