Itchy throat that starts suddenly

Sudden symptoms can follow food, medicine, an insect sting, smoke, dust, perfume, or cold dry air. Food allergy may cause mouth or throat itching soon after eating and can progress with hives, swelling, vomiting, wheezing, dizziness, or faintness. Allergic rhinitis may begin after inhaling a trigger and often includes sneezing or itchy eyes. A cold usually builds with nasal symptoms, cough, tiredness, or a sore throat, although early symptoms can be subtle.

A sudden itch does not reveal the cause by itself. Think back to what you ate, touched, inhaled, or took shortly before it began, and whether symptoms are changing.

Move away from a suspected inhaled irritant and rinse your mouth if food seems involved. Sit upright, keep monitoring your breathing and voice, and avoid eating more of a suspected food. If you have a clinician-prescribed emergency allergy plan, follow it. Do not rely on a new medicine if symptoms are progressing, and do not drive yourself if you feel faint. For mild symptoms that settle, write down the trigger and arrange clinical advice before re-exposure.

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, wheezing, a tight or hoarse throat, swelling of the lips or tongue, widespread hives, repeated vomiting, faintness, or rapidly worsening symptoms. These signs can occur in a serious allergic reaction. Seek prompt medical advice even after symptoms improve if they followed food, medicine, or a sting. For mild symptoms without warning signs, arrange review if they recur or do not settle.
