What should you know about internal scanning of uterus?

A transvaginal ultrasound can assess the uterus, uterine lining, cervix, and ovaries. It may help investigate pelvic pain, unusual bleeding, fertility concerns, or an early pregnancy. The probe does not enter the womb. A full bladder is generally not needed, although the imaging team will give specific preparation instructions. The scan can identify findings such as ovarian cysts or changes in the uterine lining, but an image alone does not always explain symptoms or confirm a diagnosis. A separate procedure, Diagnostic Hysteroscopy, looks inside the womb with a camera and is used for different questions.

Tell the clinician if you may be pregnant, have an infection, use a tampon, or find internal examinations painful. You can ask what will happen before the probe is inserted and request a pause at any point. Wear comfortable clothing and follow the centre's instructions. Ask when and how results will be shared; further blood tests, repeat imaging, or examination may be needed if the scan shows a cyst, a thickened lining, or an unclear area.

Contact the imaging service or a clinician if you develop persistent pain, fever, heavy bleeding, or unusual discharge after the scan. Seek urgent assessment for severe pelvic pain, fainting, or bleeding with a possible pregnancy, because ectopic pregnancy can require prompt attention. Do not wait for the scan report if symptoms suddenly become severe.
