What are influenza-like illness symptoms?

An influenza-like illness may include fever, chills, cough, headache, fatigue and a strong feeling of being unwell. The symptoms can appear together and may start quickly, but other viruses and respiratory conditions can create a similar pattern. Influenza presents with these symptoms in many people, yet symptoms alone cannot identify the exact cause. A runny nose, sore throat, stomach upset or muscle aches may also occur. Pneumonia is a lung infection that can cause cough, fever, chest discomfort or breathlessness and needs medical assessment when those features are prominent.

Rest, drink fluids regularly and stay home while you feel feverish or too unwell for normal activities. Reduce close contact with people who may become seriously ill, improve ventilation and wash your hands after coughing or blowing your nose. Record when symptoms began, whether they are improving and any breathing or chest changes so a clinician can make a clearer assessment.

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, collapse, new severe chest pain, inability to keep fluids down or rapidly worsening weakness. Arrange prompt review if fever continues, breathing becomes harder, cough worsens or you have a condition that raises the risk of complications.
