What should you know about influenza chest x ray?

Influenza mainly affects the airways, while a chest X-ray creates pictures of the lungs and heart area. A clinician may consider it when there is shortness of breath, chest pain, low oxygen, persistent fever, abnormal breathing sounds or concern that pneumonia has developed. The image may also reveal findings that need further assessment, but it cannot identify every cause of cough and a normal result does not explain every symptom. Chronic cough, bronchiectasis and tuberculosis may require different tests or follow-up.

During the test, you usually stand or sit against the imaging plate and hold your breath briefly while pictures are taken. Tell the imaging team if you could be pregnant, and remove metal objects from the chest area when asked. Bring information about medicines and recent diagnoses to your GP consultation. The clinician will interpret the image alongside your examination, oxygen level and symptom history rather than using it alone.

Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, chest pressure, or inability to speak comfortably because of breathlessness. Contact a clinician promptly if fever or cough is worsening, breathing becomes harder, or you improve and then deteriorate. A chest X-ray appointment should not delay emergency assessment.
