Short answer

Rosacea is a recurring facial skin condition that may cause redness, flushing, burning, sensitivity and acne-like bumps.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Recognising the pattern

Rosacea commonly affects the central face, including the cheeks, nose, chin and forehead. Symptoms can flare with heat, sunlight, hot drinks, spicy food, alcohol, stress or irritating products, although triggers vary. Skin may feel warm, sting or burn, and visible small blood vessels can develop. Eye symptoms such as gritty discomfort, watering or eyelid inflammation can accompany facial disease. Acne-like pimples may occur, but rosacea and acne are different conditions and need different assessment.

Reducing irritation

Use a gentle cleanser, fragrance-free moisturiser and broad sun protection that your skin tolerates. Introduce products one at a time and stop anything that stings persistently. Keep a trigger diary rather than removing many foods without a clear pattern. A clinician may prescribe topical treatment such as azelaic acid, or discuss light and laser options for selected redness or visible vessels. Do not use strong steroid creams on the face unless specifically directed.

When to arrange prompt care

Seek urgent help for painful red eyes, light sensitivity, blurred vision, or sudden vision change. Arrange a dermatology review for persistent facial redness, frequent burning, new bumps, thickening skin, or symptoms that are affecting sleep or daily activities. A changing rash should be assessed rather than assumed to be rosacea.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your symptoms fit rosacea, which triggers are worth tracking, whether the eyes need examination, and which topical or energy-based treatment suits your skin.
