How Is Itchy Scalp Treated?

Flaking around the scalp and hairline often accompanies dandruff or seborrhoeic dermatitis. Thick, sharply defined scale may suggest scalp psoriasis, while tender bumps can occur with folliculitis. Persistent itch with crawling sensations or nits attached to hairs raises the possibility of head lice. Hair dye, fragrance, or a new styling product can instead cause contact irritation.

Stop newly introduced products and rinse the scalp thoroughly after washing. Avoid hot water, vigorous scratching, and picking at scale. A medicated shampoo may help when dandruff or seborrhoeic dermatitis is contributing; use it according to its label or a clinician's instructions and allow contact with the scalp as directed.

If lice are found, use the recommended head-lice treatment and follow the timing and combing instructions carefully. Do not share combs, hats, or brushes until the situation has been assessed.

Arrange an appointment if the itch lasts, causes hair loss, or comes with thick plaques, bleeding, pus, or painful bumps. Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, facial swelling, fever, or a severe reaction after a product. A clinician can distinguish psoriasis, infection, lice, and dermatitis when home care has not clarified the problem.
