How does nebuliser treatment work?

A compressor or other device pushes air through the medicine cup, producing droplets small enough to inhale. The medicine may relax tightened airway muscles, reduce swelling or help move mucus, depending on what has been prescribed. A session continues while mist is being produced, and you should breathe normally unless the clinician gives different instructions.

Nebulisers may be used during an asthma flare or for selected breathing problems such as bronchiolitis, croup or acute bronchitis. They are not automatically appropriate for every cough, and the medicine and dose must match the person’s condition.

Wash your hands, measure only the prescribed medicine, and assemble the device as instructed. Sit upright, keep the mask sealed gently or hold the mouthpiece between your lips, and avoid sharing equipment. Clean and dry the medicine cup and mouthpiece after use according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Report shakiness, a racing heartbeat, throat irritation or worsening breathing to the treating team.

Call emergency services for severe shortness of breath, blue or grey lips, confusion, collapse, inability to speak normally or a child who is struggling to breathe. Obtain urgent medical advice when wheezing or chest tightness is worsening, the prescribed treatment is not helping, or breathing becomes difficult again soon after a session. Do not delay urgent care while trying repeated treatments.
