How common is cough in pneumonia?

Pneumonia inflames the small air sacs and surrounding lung tissue, which can trigger cough and make breathing uncomfortable. The cough may be dry or bring up mucus, and it can occur with fever, chills, breathlessness, chest pain when breathing deeply, or unusual tiredness. Older adults and people with other health problems may have less typical symptoms. A cough by itself cannot show whether pneumonia is present.

Arrange a clinical assessment if pneumonia is a concern, because listening to the chest and sometimes further tests may be needed. Rest, drink fluids if you can, and take prescribed treatment according to instructions. Avoid smoking and keep track of breathing, fever, alertness, and your ability to eat and drink. Do not rely on cough suppression to judge whether the illness is improving.

Seek emergency care for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, or inability to stay awake. Obtain prompt medical advice for chest pain, coughing blood, dehydration, worsening breathlessness, or symptoms that deteriorate after initial improvement. Infants, older adults, pregnant people, and those with heart, lung, or immune conditions may need assessment sooner.
