Short answer

Hepatitis A is more common where sanitation is limited, while vaccination and clean water reduce exposure risk.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Spread
Contaminated food, water, hands or close contact can transmit the virus.
Symptoms
Some people have no symptoms; others develop digestive or liver-related symptoms.
Prevention
Hand hygiene, safe food and water, and vaccination can reduce exposure.

What prevalence means

Prevalence describes how often an infection is found in a population or setting. It is not a personal diagnosis. Hepatitis A spreads mainly when virus from an infected person reaches the mouth, often through contaminated food, water or hands. People may have no symptoms, especially children, and can still pass the infection to others.

The chance of exposure depends on local sanitation, household or community contact, travel, food handling and vaccination history. Symptoms can include nausea, loss of appetite, feeling generally unwell and dark urine. These symptoms can have other causes, so they do not confirm hepatitis A.

Practical next steps

If you may have been exposed, contact a clinician promptly to discuss timing, symptoms and whether vaccination or another preventive measure is appropriate. A clinician may use history, examination and a Liver Function Test alongside targeted blood tests. Avoid preparing food for others if you feel unwell, wash hands carefully after using the toilet, and do not share towels or utensils.

If you are planning travel or work involving food or close contact, ask whether Hepatitis A Vaccination is suitable. Do not interpret population figures as a prediction of your individual risk.

When to seek care

Arrange medical advice for new jaundice, dark urine, ongoing vomiting, marked tiredness, poor fluid intake or symptoms after a known exposure. Seek urgent help if confusion, fainting, severe weakness or inability to keep fluids down develops.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: Could my symptoms fit hepatitis A or another liver problem? Which tests are needed? Was my possible exposure recent enough for preventive care? When can I return to food preparation, school or work?

Questions people ask

Does prevalence tell me whether I have hepatitis A?

No. Prevalence describes a population, whereas diagnosis requires your history and appropriate testing.

Can someone spread hepatitis A without feeling ill?

Yes. Infection can be passed on before symptoms appear, and some people remain symptom-free.
