Is hepatitis A curable?

Short answer
Hepatitis A is generally a short-term infection that the body clears, with care focused on hydration, rest, nutrition, and monitoring recovery.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Long-term pattern
- Usually a short-term infection rather than a lifelong one
- Recovery support
- Fluids, rest, nutrition, and review of liver health
What recovery means
Unlike some other viral liver infections, hepatitis A does not normally become a lifelong infection. Symptoms can still be tiring and may take time to settle. Nausea, poor appetite, feeling generally unwell, dark urine, and yellowing can occur as the liver responds to infection. Improvement is not always immediate, and a clinician may use examination and a Liver Function Test to follow liver health.
Helping your body recover
Rest and drink fluids regularly. Eat small meals when appetite is reduced, and avoid alcohol. Check every medicine, supplement, or herbal product with a clinician or pharmacist before taking it, particularly if you have another liver condition. Practise careful hand hygiene and avoid preparing food for others while infectious. Ask about Hepatitis A Vaccination for household contacts or future protection.
When recovery needs review
Seek prompt advice if symptoms worsen, vomiting limits fluids, yellowing becomes more noticeable, urine is very dark, or abdominal pain is increasing. Emergency help is needed for confusion, collapse, severe drowsiness, or inability to drink. Arrange follow-up if fatigue or appetite problems continue and are affecting daily activities.
Questions for follow-up
How will we know my liver is recovering? When can I return to normal activities and prepare food for others? Which symptoms should prompt a repeat appointment?
