Short answer

A balanced diet supports normal hair growth, but hair loss can have causes that food alone cannot correct.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Prioritise
Regular meals with protein and varied plant foods
Avoid
Unsupervised high-dose hair supplements

How nutrition relates to shedding

Hair is made from protein, so restrictive eating, poor appetite, or an unbalanced diet can leave the body without enough building materials. Low intake of iron-rich foods or other nutrients may also contribute to shedding, especially when it follows illness, weight change, or a demanding period. Nutrition is only one piece of the picture: inherited pattern loss, autoimmune patch loss, scalp infection, and repeated pulling can present differently.

Notice whether shedding is diffuse or concentrated in patches, whether the scalp is sore or scaly, and whether new short hairs are appearing. These details help a clinician distinguish nutritional concerns from conditions such as telogen effluvium or traction alopecia.

Build a hair-supportive eating pattern

Choose regular meals with protein such as eggs, fish, poultry, dairy, beans, lentils, or tofu, alongside vegetables, fruit, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. Include iron-containing foods and pair plant sources with vitamin C foods to support absorption. Avoid starting high-dose supplements without advice; excess amounts can be harmful and may obscure the real cause. A clinician can decide whether blood tests or a dietitian referral is appropriate.

When shedding needs review

Arrange a medical assessment for sudden or rapidly worsening loss, smooth bald patches, scalp pain, marked scale, redness, broken hairs, or loss of eyebrows. Seek prompt care if hair loss accompanies severe fatigue, faintness, unexplained weight change, or other new symptoms. A clinician can examine the scalp and consider conditions including alopecia areata, scalp ringworm, or female pattern hair loss.

Questions to take with you

Could my eating pattern, recent illness, or medication be contributing to shedding? Which tests are useful before taking a supplement? Does the pattern suggest telogen effluvium, inherited hair loss, or another scalp condition?
