What should you know about head lice eggs?

Short answer

A head-lice egg, or nit, is a tiny egg firmly attached to a hair shaft near the scalp; finding one does not by itself prove that live lice remain.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Nit location
Firmly attached to a hair shaft near the scalp.
Best confirmation
Finding live crawling lice or obtaining a clinical check.

How to interpret a suspected nit

Nits are attached close to the scalp and do not brush away easily. Dandruff, lint, and product residue usually move more readily along the hair. The most useful confirmation is finding a live crawling louse or having a trained clinician identify the finding. Some empty or old egg cases can stay attached after lice are no longer active.

Head lice can cause an itchy scalp, including itching that is worse at night, but some people have little or no itching. Read about [Head Lice](/conditions/head-lice/) and [Itching Worse At Night](/symptoms/itching-worse-at-night/) for related symptoms.

What to do next

Use bright light and separate small sections of damp, conditioned hair. Comb from the scalp outward with a fine-toothed lice comb, wiping the teeth after each pass. Check close contacts and do not share combs, brushes, hats, or hair accessories. Do not pick at the scalp or use repeated chemical products just because an isolated speck is present. Confirmed live lice need an appropriate [Head Lice Treatment](/treatments/medical-dermatology/head-lice-treatment/) plan.

When to seek care

Book a [GP Consultation](/treatments/consultations-and-assessment/gp-consultation/) if you cannot distinguish a nit from debris, if live lice are still seen after treatment, or if scratching has produced broken skin, crusting, or redness. Prompt advice is sensible for pain, pus, fever, or significant scalp swelling.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the object is attached to the hair, whether live lice are present, whether treatment is needed, and when the scalp should be rechecked.

Questions people ask

Do nits always mean an active infestation?

No. Old or empty egg cases can remain attached, so live lice and the location of eggs matter.

Can dandruff look like a nit?

Yes. Dandruff usually loosens more easily, while a nit is firmly cemented to the hair.
