How do head lice combs work?

The close-set teeth catch insects and eggs that a regular brush may miss. Wet, conditioned hair slows movement and reduces pulling, making inspection easier. Begin near the scalp because live lice and newly attached eggs are found there. A white tissue or light-coloured towel can make anything removed easier to see. Flakes, lint, and product residue may look similar, so a suspected nit should be checked for firm attachment to a hair rather than judged by appearance alone.

Wet the hair, apply conditioner, and divide it into manageable sections. Place the comb at the scalp and pull it slowly to the ends, then wipe or rinse the teeth after each pass. Work through every section, including behind the ears and at the nape. Repeat checks according to the treatment plan, especially when live lice have been found. Clean the comb after use and do not share it. A comb can remove lice, but persistent infestation may also require a recommended treatment.

Seek a GP consultation if you cannot tell whether the scalp contains lice, if live lice remain after careful combing and treatment, or if repeated combing causes sores. Prompt medical advice is needed for infected scratches, pus, fever, marked swelling, or severe pain. Ask before using medicated products on a child, during pregnancy, or on a scalp with eczema or broken skin.
