What an asthma attack means

Triggers can include viral infections, smoke, allergens, exercise, cold air or irritants. Allergic rhinitis and house dust mite allergy may coexist with asthma, while a chronic cough can have several causes. A quiet chest is not always reassuring if very little air is moving.

What to do during an attack

Sit upright, stay as calm as possible, and move away from a known trigger. Use your reliever inhaler exactly as your action plan directs, with a spacer if prescribed. Do not lie flat or borrow another person’s inhaler. If your plan says to repeat doses or use nebuliser treatment, follow it while arranging help.

When to seek emergency care

Call emergency services if breathing is very difficult, the reliever is not helping, symptoms are rapidly worsening, lips look blue or grey, you are exhausted, confused or faint, or you cannot speak in full sentences. Emergency assessment is also needed after a severe attack, even if breathing improves.
