Short answer

Hair loss three months postpartum often reflects a temporary shift in the hair cycle, but persistent or patchy loss deserves assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why shedding can start then

During pregnancy, hormonal changes can keep more hairs in a growing phase. After birth, some of those hairs move together into a resting phase and shed later, making the timing feel sudden. This diffuse shedding is commonly called telogen effluvium. It may be most visible around the hairline, parting, or in the shower. Blood loss, thyroid changes, low iron, poor nutrition, illness, and sleep disruption can also contribute. Postpartum shedding is not proof of a permanent hair disorder.

Practical care

Use gentle shampooing, avoid tight hairstyles and frequent heat, and detangle without pulling. Eat regular meals with adequate protein and discuss supplements with your clinician, especially if breastfeeding or taking other medicines. Keep simple photographs of the parting and temples. A clinician can review recovery, examine the scalp, and decide whether blood tests for iron or thyroid function are appropriate.

When to seek care

Book an assessment for sharply defined patches, eyebrow loss, scalp scale, pain, pus, intense itch, or a widening smooth area. Also arrange review if shedding is heavy and ongoing, or if it comes with palpitations, marked fatigue, dizziness, cold intolerance, or menstrual changes. A new pattern may need a different explanation, such as alopecia areata or female pattern hair loss.

Questions for your doctor

Does my shedding fit telogen effluvium? Should iron or thyroid tests be checked? Are my supplements suitable while breastfeeding? Which changes would suggest another scalp condition?

Questions people ask

Is postpartum hair shedding always permanent?

No. A temporary hair-cycle shift is common, although another condition can coexist and should be assessed when the pattern is unusual.

Can breastfeeding cause hair loss?

Shedding after birth is usually linked to the postpartum hair-cycle change; nutrition, iron status, thyroid function, and other factors may also matter.
