Hair Loss Spots on the Head

Multiple smooth patches can be a presentation of alopecia areata. Spots with scale, itching, or broken hairs may occur with scalp ringworm, especially when infection spreads between people or through shared hair items. Repeated tension can produce traction alopecia around areas pulled by styling. Male or female pattern hair loss can create more diffuse thinning, and telogen effluvium can cause widespread shedding after a body stress rather than separate bare spots. A scalp examination helps separate these possibilities.

Map the spots with dated photographs and note any recent illness, stress, dietary restriction, new medicine, or change in hairstyle. Pause tight braids, extensions, chemical processing, and vigorous brushing. Do not share combs, brushes, hats, or pillow coverings if scale or broken hairs are present. A clinician may examine the scalp, hair shafts, and nearby skin before recommending targeted treatment.

Seek prompt medical advice when spots spread quickly, the scalp is painful or swollen, or there is pus, crusting, fever, or marked redness. Arrange assessment for eyebrow loss, shiny scar-like skin, or repeated new patches. These signs can signal inflammation, infection, or follicle injury that needs timely attention.
