Hair loss and psoriasis treatment: what to know

Scalp psoriasis can create thick scale and itch. Scratching or forcefully lifting scale may damage hairs or inflame the skin, making shedding more noticeable. Hair loss can also have another cause, such as Male Pattern Hair Loss, Alopecia Areata or Telogen Effluvium, so scalp psoriasis should not be assumed to explain every change.

Treatment plans may use prescribed scalp medicines, careful scale management and gentle washing. The right choice depends on the extent of inflammation, other medicines and whether the skin is broken or infected.

Avoid picking or scraping plaques, loosen scale only as directed, and use lukewarm water with gentle handling. Follow the prescribed schedule and tell the clinician if burning, worsening redness or new shedding follows an application. Keep hairstyles loose and limit heat while the scalp is irritated. Improvement in inflammation may reduce shedding, but regrowth needs time and a separate pattern may remain.

Seek assessment for painful plaques, bleeding, pus, spreading redness, sudden bald patches or loss of eyelashes or eyebrows. Contact the prescriber if treatment causes marked irritation or the scalp is not improving. Broken hairs and intense itch may also call for checking conditions such as Scalp Ringworm.
