Hair Loss on One Side of the Head: What to Know

A sharply defined, smooth patch may be a presentation of Alopecia Areata. Scaling, broken hairs, itching, or tender bumps can occur with Scalp Ringworm, particularly when infection is involved. Hair can also thin where a tight hairstyle, head covering, helmet, or habitual rubbing repeatedly stresses it; this pattern can fit Traction Alopecia. Male Pattern Hair Loss and Female Pattern Hair Loss usually follow broader distribution, but an apparent difference between sides can make early change look one-sided. A clinician can distinguish shedding from broken hair by examining the roots and shafts.

Part the hair gently and photograph the area from several angles, without pulling hairs to test it. Pause tight styles, extensions, harsh chemical processing, and friction over the affected side. Use a mild cleanser and do not share combs, brushes, hats, or pillows if there is scale or suspected infection. Record itching, pain, redness, flaking, new medicines, recent illness, and how quickly the patch changed. Do not apply prescription products or household remedies without an assessment.

Book a dermatology review for a new localized patch, especially if it is expanding or accompanied by scale or broken hairs. Seek prompt care for pus, significant tenderness, swelling, fever, or a rapidly inflamed scalp. Loss of eyelashes or eyebrows, or several new patches, should also be assessed without delay.
