Foods for hair growth when you have hair loss

Short answer
A varied diet with enough protein and key nutrients supports hair growth, but no food can rapidly treat every cause of hair loss.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How food relates to hair
Hair is made from protein, so prolonged under-eating or a very restricted diet can affect the growth cycle. Iron, zinc, vitamin B12, vitamin D, and other nutrients may matter when a deficiency is present, but taking extra does not make follicles grow faster when levels are already adequate. Hair changes also arise from inherited pattern loss, autoimmune disease, scalp infection, medication, or a shedding response after illness.
Diffuse shedding can occur with Telogen Effluvium, while smooth patches may fit Alopecia Areata. The pattern, scalp appearance, and wider health history are more informative than a single food or supplement.
Build a supportive eating pattern
Include a regular source of protein such as eggs, fish, dairy, beans, lentils, tofu, or poultry, alongside vegetables, fruit, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. Pair iron-containing plant foods with vitamin C-rich foods to support absorption. Avoid crash diets and discuss vegetarian, vegan, or elimination diets with a clinician if shedding has started. Do not use high-dose biotin or iron unless advised; supplements can interfere with tests or cause harm. A clinician can decide whether targeted blood tests are appropriate.
When food is not the whole answer
Arrange a review for sudden bald patches, scalp scale, pain, redness, pustules, or broken hairs. Seek care for hair loss accompanied by marked fatigue, dizziness, bowel changes, or unexplained weight change. Persistent or worsening thinning deserves assessment because nutrition may be one factor among several, and treating a deficiency is different from treating inherited or inflammatory hair loss.
Questions to bring
Could my eating pattern or a deficiency be contributing? Which tests fit my symptoms? Is a supplement necessary and safe with my medicines? Does the pattern suggest Telogen Effluvium or another condition? How long should I track changes before reviewing them?

Questions people ask
What is the best food for hair growth?
There is no single best food; a varied eating pattern that supplies protein and nutrients is more useful than relying on one ingredient.
Can vitamins stop hair loss?
Vitamins may help when a deficiency contributes, but they do not treat every form of hair loss and can be unsafe in excess.
