Hair Loss Blood Panel: What to Know

Short answer
A hair-loss blood panel can look for medical contributors to shedding, but the right tests depend on your symptoms, examination, medicines, and health history.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What testing can and cannot show
Blood work may help a clinician assess issues such as iron storage, thyroid function, blood-cell health, or hormone changes when your history suggests them. It does not identify every cause of hair loss, and a normal result does not rule out pattern hair loss, alopecia areata, traction alopecia, or scalp disease. The distribution of thinning, the appearance of the scalp, and a hair-pull or dermatoscope examination can be just as informative.
Preparing for an assessment
Record when shedding began, whether it followed illness, major stress, weight change, childbirth, or a new medicine, and whether loss is diffuse or patchy. Bring a list of medicines and supplements because some can affect results or hair growth. Ask whether fasting is needed before the planned tests. Do not start iron, hormones, or high-dose supplements based only on hair shedding; treatment should match a confirmed deficiency or diagnosis.
When to seek care promptly
Arrange prompt review for rapidly increasing loss, smooth bald patches, scalp pain, redness, pus, heavy scale, or loss of eyebrows and eyelashes. Seek urgent care if hair changes occur with severe weakness, fainting, breathing difficulty, or other sudden systemic symptoms. A clinician may need to examine the scalp directly rather than relying on blood results alone.
Questions for your doctor
Which blood tests fit my pattern of hair loss and medical history? Do any medicines or supplements affect the results? What will we do if the panel is normal, and when should the scalp be rechecked?

Questions people ask
Does everyone with hair loss need blood tests?
No. Testing is guided by the pattern of loss, symptoms, examination findings, and personal health history.
Can a normal panel explain my hair loss?
A normal panel can make some contributors less likely, but it does not exclude inherited, immune-related, traction, or scalp causes.
