Hair Loss Because of Psoriasis: What to Know

Scalp psoriasis can leave thick, itchy plaques around the hair shafts. Scratching may break hairs or loosen them during washing, while forcefully lifting scale can irritate the skin and disturb growing hairs. Some people notice shedding after a flare rather than at its start. Hair often grows back when inflammation settles, but another cause can exist at the same time, including alopecia areata, pattern hair loss, or telogen effluvium.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if shedding continues, and describe the timing of flares, itching, tenderness, and any new medicines. Use prescribed scalp treatments exactly as directed; do not scrape plaques or pick at crusts. Wash gently, loosen scale only with a recommended product, and avoid tight hairstyles, harsh chemical processing, and vigorous brushing while the scalp is sore. Take clear photos of the scalp during a flare so changes are easier to compare.

Seek prompt medical care for sudden smooth bald patches, pus, marked swelling, bleeding, severe pain, fever, or areas that feel hot. A scaly patch with broken hairs or swollen glands may need assessment for scalp ringworm. Rapidly expanding loss or eyebrow and eyelash changes also deserve review because they may signal a condition beyond psoriasis.
