Hair loss and an itchy body: what should you know?

Scalp itch with scale, broken hairs, or tender areas can occur with Scalp Ringworm, while body itch may come from eczema, contact irritation, dryness, or another skin condition. Alopecia Areata usually produces smooth patches and may occur alongside other immune-related symptoms, but itch is not enough to identify it. Diffuse shedding after illness, stress, or dietary change can fit Telogen Effluvium and may be separate from the itchy skin. New medicines and products should also be considered.

Check the scalp and skin for scale, rash, redness, sores, or new patches; note where the itch began and whether anyone close to you is itchy. List new soaps, hair products, medicines, supplements, travel, illness, and exposures. Use fragrance-free moisturiser for dry skin, avoid scratching and tight hairstyles, and do not share combs, hats, or towels if a contagious scalp infection is possible. Arrange clinical assessment for persistent combined symptoms.

Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading rash, facial swelling, breathing trouble, fever, painful scalp swelling, pus, or sudden extensive hair loss. Arrange a dermatology appointment when itch disrupts sleep, causes skin damage, or occurs with scale, broken hairs, or defined bald patches. These findings can require targeted treatment rather than a cosmetic product.
