Is hair loss after giving birth normal?

Short answer
Hair loss after giving birth can be a normal temporary shedding pattern caused by hormonal changes, but patchy loss or scalp symptoms should be checked.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding postpartum shedding
Pregnancy can hold more hairs in active growth. Following delivery, a larger group may shift into the resting phase and then shed. You may see extra hair on a pillow, brush or shower drain, and the part may appear broader. This is commonly termed Telogen Effluvium. It usually affects shedding diffusely rather than creating a single smooth bald patch. Stress, illness, nutrition and hormonal or thyroid changes can alter the picture.
How to look after your hair
Keep routines simple: wash gently, condition the ends and detangle without pulling. Avoid tight buns, extensions and repeated high-heat styling. Protect exposed scalp from strong sun with a hat. Eat enough energy and protein for your recovery, and do not self-prescribe iron or hair medicines without advice. If breastfeeding, tell the clinician before using oral or topical treatments.
When to arrange care
Seek a review when loss forms clear patches, affects the eyebrows, or comes with scaling, redness, pain or intense itch. Contact a clinician promptly for fever, drainage or rapidly worsening inflammation. Also mention marked fatigue, dizziness, breathlessness, unusual temperature sensitivity or ongoing menstrual changes, since these may need a separate evaluation.
What to ask
Ask whether your shedding is consistent with postpartum Telogen Effluvium and whether symptoms justify iron or thyroid testing. Ask when regrowth should be reviewed and how to distinguish ongoing diffuse shedding from Female Pattern Hair Loss or Alopecia Areata.
