Short answer

Care for thinning hair by reducing traction and chemical damage, treating the scalp gently, and arranging an assessment because reduced density can have several different causes.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What thinning can show

Thinning hair may appear as a wider part, a smaller ponytail, more scalp showing, or gradual loss at the temples or crown. Male Pattern Hair Loss and Female Pattern Hair Loss are common pattern presentations, while Telogen Effluvium can follow a physical or emotional strain and may cause more diffuse shedding. The symptom does not identify its cause by itself. A history and scalp examination help separate shedding, breakage, and follicle conditions. See [Thinning Hair](/symptoms/hair-thinning/) for related symptom information.

Protect the hair you have

Choose a mild shampoo, condition the lengths, and detangle with a wide-tooth comb. Keep ponytails, braids, buns, extensions, and hairpieces loose enough that the scalp does not pull or hurt. Limit bleaching, relaxers, repeated heat, and vigorous towel drying. Eat regularly and avoid restrictive diets; discuss supplements before taking them. Once the cause is clearer, a clinician may discuss options such as Topical Minoxidil, PRP For Hair Loss, or cosmetic Scalp Micropigmentation. Each option has different aims and suitability.

When to seek care

Arrange an assessment for persistent or progressive thinning, sudden heavy shedding, patchy bare areas, scalp pain, redness, scaling, or intense itch. Seek prompt review if the scalp is swollen, crusted, bleeding, or draining. Tell the clinician about recent illness, surgery, childbirth, major stress, weight change, new medicines, and family patterns. Early examination can identify inflammation or scarring, where delaying care may affect the available choices.

Questions for your doctor

Does the pattern suggest shedding, breakage, or a follicle disorder? Do I need scalp examination or blood tests? Which styling changes matter most for me, and what treatment benefits and side effects should I weigh?

Questions people ask

Can a different shampoo reverse thinning?

A gentle shampoo can reduce irritation and breakage, but it usually cannot address the underlying cause of reduced density.

Is scalp micropigmentation a hair-growth treatment?

No. It is a cosmetic option that can make the scalp look less visible without increasing hair growth.
