What should you know about gout in the wrist?

Gout is an inflammatory response to urate crystals inside a joint. In the wrist, a flare may make bending the wrist, gripping or lifting objects difficult, and swelling can extend into the hand. Wrist gout is less familiar than toe gout, so clinicians may also consider infection, a fracture, tendon inflammation or another arthritis. Diagnosis depends on the whole picture. Examination, a review of medicines and health conditions, and selected blood or joint-fluid tests may help separate these causes.

Rest from lifting and forceful gripping while the wrist is inflamed. Support it in a neutral, comfortable position and raise the hand when possible. A cool pack wrapped in cloth can be used briefly; protect the skin and stop if numbness develops. Follow the treatment prescribed for you and check before taking additional pain medicine, particularly with kidney disease, ulcers, heart disease or medicines that affect bleeding. After recovery, ask about a plan to prevent further flares.

Seek prompt care for a first swollen wrist, fever, chills, spreading redness, a wound or rapidly increasing pain. A joint infection can threaten hand function and may initially resemble gout. Get urgent help after a fall or impact, or if fingers become numb, blue, unusually cold or difficult to move. Ongoing swelling or repeated episodes also need review rather than repeated self-treatment.
