Gout in the index finger: what to know

Gout is caused by urate crystals irritating a joint. In the index finger, inflammation may involve a knuckle or finger joint and can make typing, dressing, or holding objects uncomfortable. The skin can look red and feel hot, while movement becomes limited because of pain and swelling. A swollen finger can also result from infection, injury, or another type of arthritis, so the appearance does not settle the diagnosis. A clinician may review the timing of symptoms, examine nearby joints, and consider blood tests, imaging, or sampling joint fluid. Kidney disease and obesity may influence gout care, but they do not identify the cause of a particular finger flare.

Remove tight rings early if swelling is developing, rest the hand, and keep it raised when possible. A cool pack wrapped in cloth may provide short-term comfort. Avoid forceful gripping and do not puncture or squeeze the swollen area. Arrange medical advice for a first attack, severe pain, or symptoms that do not improve. Use only treatments recommended for your health history, and mention kidney problems, stomach ulcers, blood thinners, or allergies before taking anti-inflammatory medicine.

Seek urgent assessment for a hot swollen finger with fever, chills, pus, a wound, red streaking, or rapidly spreading redness, because infection can resemble gout. Get prompt help if the finger becomes blue, numb, severely deformed, or impossible to move, or if a ring cannot be removed safely. Recurrent attacks and firm lumps near a joint also deserve review.
