Goop and perimenopause: what to know

Short answer
Perimenopause is the transition before menopause, and online advice or products cannot replace an individual assessment of your symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Understanding the transition
During perimenopause, ovarian hormone patterns change and periods may become irregular before they stop. Some people notice heavy periods, missed periods, hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disruption, mood changes or lower sex drive. Symptoms can vary from month to month, and several other conditions can cause similar changes.
The term may appear in wellness articles, supplements and social media discussions. A product marketed for perimenopause may have unclear ingredients, interactions or dosing. “Natural” does not automatically mean suitable, especially with pregnancy risk, liver disease, migraine, clotting history or prescribed medicines.
A sensible next step
Keep a simple record of bleeding, sleep, temperature episodes, mood and medicines. Arrange a clinical review if symptoms disrupt daily life, bleeding becomes unusually heavy, or cycles change in a way that concerns you. Before taking a supplement, show the full ingredient list to a pharmacist or clinician. Discuss options based on your symptoms, medical history and personal priorities.
When to seek care promptly
Seek prompt care for very heavy bleeding, faintness, chest pain, severe headache, one-sided weakness, or thoughts of harming yourself. Bleeding after periods have fully stopped also needs assessment. Urgent symptoms should not be attributed to perimenopause without medical review.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your pattern fits perimenopause, what other causes should be checked, whether contraception is still needed, and which treatment or non-medication measures fit your health history.

Questions people ask
Can a wellness product diagnose perimenopause?
No. A product or online quiz cannot establish the cause of symptoms or rule out other conditions.
Are irregular periods part of perimenopause?
They can be, but a new or troublesome bleeding pattern should still be assessed, particularly when bleeding is heavy.
