Liquid medication for GERD

Some liquids act locally in the stomach to neutralise acid or create a layer that reduces contact between stomach contents and the food pipe. Their timing, ingredients, and duration of use differ, so a familiar brand name does not guarantee that two products work the same way.

Read the label, measure each dose with the supplied device, and follow the stated timing. Shake a suspension if the label instructs you to do so. Keep a gap from other medicines when advised because some ingredients can affect absorption. Avoid taking repeated doses beyond the label or using someone else’s prescription.

Smaller meals, staying upright after eating, and avoiding personal triggers can support treatment. Seek a review if symptoms keep returning, need frequent self-treatment, or do not improve as expected.

Obtain urgent help for chest tightness with breathlessness, sweating, faintness, or pain spreading to the arm or jaw. Prompt assessment is needed for food sticking, painful swallowing, repeated vomiting, blood in vomit, black stools, severe abdominal pain, dehydration, or unplanned weight loss.

Ask which liquid ingredient matches your symptoms, when to take it, how long to use it, and whether it interacts with your regular medicines. Also ask what should happen if symptoms return after the course ends.
