How reflux may affect breathing

Stomach contents can move upwards into the food pipe and throat. This may trigger throat clearing, coughing, a hoarse voice, or a sensation that breathing is restricted. Reflux symptoms can be more noticeable after meals, when bending, or when lying down. A hiatus hernia can make reflux easier to experience, while excess abdominal pressure can worsen it. Reflux is not the only explanation for breathing symptoms; asthma, chest conditions, and heart problems can feel similar.

Notice whether episodes follow meals, late-night eating, alcohol, or lying flat, and record associated cough or chest symptoms. Smaller meals, staying upright after eating, and raising the upper body during sleep may reduce backflow. Avoid smoking and discuss persistent symptoms with a clinician, who can review medicines and consider treatment for acid reflux. Do not use another person’s inhaler or assume that every breathing episode is reflux.

Call emergency services for severe or rapidly worsening breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, or chest pressure with sweating, nausea, or pain spreading to the arm or jaw.
