What should you know about gastric reflux cough?

Reflux can bring acidic or non-acidic material upward, irritating sensitive tissues and provoking throat clearing or cough. Symptoms may be worse after meals, when bending, or when lying down, and may include sour taste, hoarseness or a sensation of a lump in the throat. Cough also has many other causes, including a common cold, allergic rhinitis, asthma, acute bronchitis, chronic cough and other airway conditions. The timing does not prove reflux is the cause.

Keep upright after meals, avoid eating close to bedtime, and notice whether particular foods or drinks bring symptoms on. Smaller meals may reduce stomach pressure. Avoid smoking and ask a pharmacist about suitable options if you need symptom relief. Arrange a review if the cough persists, returns often, disrupts sleep or has not been assessed, because treatment depends on the cause.

Seek urgent care for severe breathlessness, chest pain, blue lips, coughing blood, fainting, confusion or sudden worsening. Arrange prompt assessment for trouble swallowing, repeated vomiting, unexplained weight loss, persistent hoarseness, fever or a cough that is not settling.

Ask whether the cough pattern fits reflux or an airway condition, whether you need an examination or testing, and how long to try any treatment before review. Mention all medicines, smoking or vaping and nighttime symptoms.
