What should you know about fungal sputum culture?

You usually rinse your mouth, take a deep breath, and cough mucus from the chest into a sterile container. Saliva alone may not provide a useful sample. The laboratory checks whether fungi grow and may identify the organism. A positive result needs context because some organisms can colonise the airways without causing invasive disease. A negative result does not rule out every infection. Symptoms, examination, imaging, immune health, and other samples help distinguish infection from conditions such as COPD, Bronchiectasis, Pneumonia, or Chronic Sinusitis.

Follow the collection instructions carefully and tell the clinician about antibiotics, antifungal medicines, inhalers, smoking, and recent hospital treatment. Provide a fresh deep-cough sample rather than saliva when possible. If producing mucus is difficult, the team may use another method. Do not stop prescribed medicine unless instructed. Ask how and where to deliver the container and when results will be reviewed.

Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, coughing up a large amount of blood, or rapidly worsening illness. Arrange prompt review for persistent fever, chest pain, or increasing amounts of discoloured phlegm. A long-lasting productive cough also warrants assessment, particularly with known lung disease.
