What should you know about functional MRI scan?

Functional MRI, or fMRI, records brain activity indirectly by detecting blood-flow changes while you rest or complete a task. A team may ask you to move your fingers, speak, remember images, or respond to sounds. The results can show which brain areas support language, movement, or other functions. This mapping may help before brain surgery, including assessment around a brain tumour, but it does not replace a standard MRI, biopsy, or clinical examination.

Tell the imaging team about metal fragments, implants, a pacemaker, pregnancy, kidney problems, or difficulty staying still. Remove jewellery, cards, and other metal objects as instructed. Wear comfortable clothing and follow the centre’s eating, drinking, and medicine directions. During the scan, lie still inside the scanner and follow the task instructions; the machine makes loud sounds, so hearing protection is provided. Ask about support if enclosed spaces cause anxiety.

Contact the imaging service if you develop a new problem after the appointment or cannot complete the scan because of distress. Seek emergency help for sudden weakness, trouble speaking, a seizure, severe headache, or loss of consciousness. A scan result is interpreted with your symptoms and examination, so arrange the planned review rather than trying to read the images alone.

Ask what task you will perform, what brain function is being mapped, whether contrast is needed, how the result will affect planning, and when the report will be discussed.
