Fractional laser for a keloid: what to know

A fractional laser creates microscopic treatment columns while leaving nearby skin available to support healing. For a keloid, the aim may be to improve stiffness, surface texture, or access for another prescribed treatment. A raised scar that extends beyond the original wound is not the same as a flat, darker scar, so diagnosis matters before choosing a laser.

Have a dermatologist examine the scar, its growth pattern, tenderness, itch, and previous responses to treatment. Share any history of keloids, recent tanning, active skin infection, or medicines that affect healing.
