Can you have flu and pneumonia shots at the same time?

The flu vaccine is designed to reduce the risk of influenza, while a pneumonia vaccine targets specific germs that can cause pneumococcal disease. Pneumonia itself can have several causes, including influenza, COVID-19, and other infections, so vaccination does not prevent every case. Having both vaccines at one appointment can reduce the need for separate visits, but eligibility depends on age, health conditions, previous doses, pregnancy, allergies, and local guidance. Protection develops after vaccination rather than immediately.

Tell the vaccinator about previous reactions, current illness, pregnancy, immune problems, and medicines. Ask which product and schedule apply to you, and bring any vaccination record you have. A sore arm, tiredness, mild fever, or chills can occur after vaccination and usually settles with rest and fluids. If you already have a cough or fever, ask whether to attend as planned or rearrange the appointment. Vaccines do not treat an active influenza or pneumonia infection.

Seek urgent help after vaccination for difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, collapse, or severe dizziness. Contact a clinician if fever is persistent, symptoms are worsening, or you develop chest pain, breathlessness, or coughing up phlegm. These symptoms can need assessment for an infection such as pneumonia, rather than being assumed to be a vaccine reaction.
