What should you know about fever and light sensitivity?

Light sensitivity means ordinary indoor or outdoor light feels uncomfortable, painful, or difficult to tolerate. Fever may accompany an infection, while migraine can cause light sensitivity with headache, nausea, or visual symptoms; migraine itself does not usually cause a fever. Conjunctivitis can cause red, irritated, watery eyes and light discomfort, especially when the surface of the eye is inflamed.

Meningitis is an uncommon but serious possibility when fever occurs with a severe headache, neck stiffness, vomiting, drowsiness, confusion, or a new rash. Symptoms can worsen quickly, so the combination should be judged by its severity and associated features rather than by light sensitivity alone.

Move to a comfortably dim room, rest your eyes, and drink fluids in small regular amounts. Reduce screen brightness and avoid driving if vision is painful or unclear. Do not wear contact lenses while an eye is red or painful. A clinician or pharmacist can advise on fever relief after checking your age, pregnancy status, allergies, and other medicines.

Arrange same-day medical advice if the light sensitivity is new with fever, persistent, or linked to eye pain, reduced vision, marked redness, or repeated vomiting. Record when each symptom started and whether headache, neck stiffness, or a rash appeared.

Seek emergency care for fever with a severe or rapidly worsening headache, stiff neck, confusion, unusual sleepiness, a seizure, fainting, weakness, difficulty speaking, repeated vomiting, or a rash that does not fade when pressed. Urgent eye assessment is needed for sudden vision change, severe eye pain, or strong light intolerance in one eye.
