Ferritin and hair loss: what the connection means

Short answer

Ferritin is a blood marker of stored iron, and a low result may contribute to hair shedding, but it does not explain every type of hair loss or replace a scalp assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

What ferritin reflects
Stored iron, interpreted alongside symptoms and other blood results.
Hair pattern clue
Iron-related shedding is often diffuse rather than a single smooth patch.
Before supplements

How iron stores fit the picture

Hair follicles are active tissues with changing growth and resting phases. When the body has inadequate iron stores, some people develop diffuse shedding, often noticed across the scalp rather than as one sharply outlined patch. A low ferritin result may point toward iron depletion, but the meaning depends on the laboratory range, haemoglobin, symptoms, diet, menstrual or other blood loss, pregnancy history, and medical conditions.

Ferritin alone cannot distinguish telogen effluvium from female pattern hair loss, traction alopecia, alopecia areata, or a scalp infection. A clinician combines the result with the shedding timeline, scalp examination, medication history, and sometimes other blood tests. Hair loss is not proof of iron deficiency, and an abnormal ferritin result is not proof that iron is the only cause.

What to do with the result

Discuss the result with a clinician before taking iron supplements. The appropriate dose and duration depend on the cause, other test results, pregnancy status, medicines, and how well you tolerate treatment. Food sources of iron may be reviewed, and ongoing blood loss or absorption problems may need attention. Keep photographs and note when shedding started; hair changes often lag behind the event that triggered them. If ferritin is not low, ask what other explanation fits the observed pattern rather than assuming the test has ruled out all medical causes.

When to arrange medical review

Arrange an assessment for persistent or rapidly worsening shedding, visible scalp patches, scalp pain or scale, or hair loss with fatigue, breathlessness, dizziness, paleness, heavy periods, or other bleeding. Prompt care is needed for severe weakness, fainting, or signs of major bleeding. A clinician can decide whether ferritin should be repeated and whether another cause needs investigation.

Useful questions

How does my ferritin result fit with my haemoglobin and symptoms? Could menstrual, dietary, gastrointestinal, or other blood loss be contributing? Does my scalp pattern suggest telogen effluvium, female pattern hair loss, traction, alopecia areata, or infection? Should I take iron, and how will we monitor it?

Questions people ask

Can low ferritin cause hair loss without anaemia?

It may be associated with shedding even when other blood results do not show anaemia, but the result needs clinical interpretation.

Will raising ferritin regrow every type of hair loss?

No. Correcting iron depletion may address one contributor, while pattern, traction, autoimmune, or scalp conditions need their own care.
