What should you know about feather allergy test?

Feather exposure can occur through pillows, duvets, clothing, upholstery, or handling birds. A clinician may use a skin prick test, an allergy blood test, or both, depending on your symptoms and medical history. The result is interpreted alongside what happens when you are exposed; a positive result shows sensitisation, but it does not by itself prove that feathers cause every symptom.

Symptoms linked with an allergic response may include sneezing, a blocked or runny nose, itchy watery eyes, cough, chest tightness, or an itchy rash. Dust, mites, mould, and bird proteins can be present around feather products, so testing may consider more than feathers alone. Allergic Rhinitis and Allergic Conjunctivitis can affect the nose and eyes, respectively.

Tell the testing team about medicines, skin conditions, pregnancy, breathing problems, and any previous severe reaction. Some medicines can affect skin testing, so do not stop prescribed treatment unless the clinician gives you a plan. Bring a simple record of the product, setting, timing, and symptoms involved.

While waiting for assessment, reduce exposure by using non-feather bedding and washing bedding regularly. Avoid disturbing dusty items and ask about alternatives if symptoms occur around birds or pets. Do not make major diet changes based on a feather result; Food Allergy is a separate issue.

Seek urgent help for sudden trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, widespread hives, repeated vomiting, or rapidly worsening symptoms after exposure. These can be features of Anaphylaxis. Asthma symptoms such as severe wheezing or difficulty speaking need prompt medical attention.

Ask which allergens will be tested, whether medicines need adjusting, how the result fits your exposure history, and what bedding or environmental changes are sensible.
