False ectopic pregnancy

An early scan may not show where a pregnancy is located because it is too soon to see clearly. Pain, bleeding, a positive pregnancy test, or a changing pregnancy hormone level can raise concern without proving a tubal pregnancy. Pelvic inflammatory disease, an ovarian problem, or another source of pelvic pain can also mimic the symptoms. Clinicians may describe this as a pregnancy of unknown location while they repeat tests and imaging.

Attend every planned blood test and ultrasound, even if pain improves. Keep a record of bleeding, pain location, dizziness, and test dates. Do not take new medicines without checking their suitability in pregnancy. Your clinician may recommend observation, medicine, or surgery after reviewing the pregnancy location, hormone pattern, symptoms, and examination. A transvaginal ultrasound is commonly used to look at the uterus and nearby structures.

Go to emergency care for sudden or worsening pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, severe dizziness, weakness, heavy bleeding, or collapse. A pregnancy outside the uterus can rupture even while the diagnosis is being clarified. Do not wait for the next appointment when these warning symptoms appear.

Ask what the current findings show, when the next hormone test or scan is due, and which symptoms require immediate return. If treatment is proposed, ask about alternatives, recovery, and how it may affect future pregnancy.
