Facial swelling when waking up

Short answer
Facial swelling on waking is often temporary, but persistent, one-sided, or rapidly worsening swelling deserves medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Onset, duration, triggers, pain, redness, hives, breathing symptoms, and urine changes.
- Helpful observation
- Swelling that fades as the day progresses may reflect overnight fluid movement.
What it may mean
Fluid can collect in facial tissues overnight, especially after salty food, poor sleep, or sleeping with the head flat. Swelling that improves during the morning may fit this pattern. Puffy eyelids with nasal blockage, facial pressure, or thick discharge can accompany sinusitis. Itchy hives or swelling of the lips may indicate angioedema, sometimes linked with an allergy. A painful, warm, red area on one side can occur with cellulitis. Recurrent puffiness with leg swelling or changes in urine should be discussed because kidney disease can also cause fluid retention. The timing provides a clue, not a diagnosis.
What to do today
Compare both sides of your face in a photograph and record when the swelling starts, how long it lasts, and whether it follows particular meals, medicines, bedding, or skincare products. Keep your head slightly raised while resting, use a cool compress around closed eyes, and avoid rubbing the area. Do not stop prescribed medicine without advice. A clinician may check your skin, mouth, nose, blood pressure, and urine depending on the pattern.
When to seek care
Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, blue lips, or rapidly spreading swelling, as these can be signs of anaphylaxis. Seek urgent assessment for eye pain, impaired vision, severe headache, fever, painful redness, or difficulty opening the mouth. Book a routine appointment when morning swelling keeps returning, lasts through the day, or occurs with ankle swelling, reduced urine, or unexplained weight change.
Questions for your doctor
What pattern does my swelling suggest? Should I have allergy, sinus, kidney, or medicine-related checks? Which symptoms mean I should seek emergency care?
