Facial swelling on one side with sinus symptoms

Sinusitis can cause congestion, pressure, reduced smell, and fullness in the cheek, forehead, or area beside the nose. Swelling that is clearly one-sided can also reflect cellulitis, a dental source, or a blocked drainage pathway, so the location matters. Angioedema usually develops more suddenly and may affect the eyelids or lips. A clinician may need to examine the nose, face, teeth, and eyes to separate these possibilities.

Note which side is affected and whether congestion, discharge, fever, tooth pain, skin warmth, or vision changes are present. Rest, drink fluids, and use saline nasal care if it suits you. Avoid pressing on the swelling or starting antibiotics without advice. Arrange medical review when one-sided swelling persists, symptoms are severe, or the area becomes red, hot, or tender.

Seek emergency care for swelling around the eye with vision change, painful eye movement, severe headache, confusion, rapidly spreading redness, or high fever. Also call emergency services for tongue or throat swelling, breathing trouble, or faintness, which can signal anaphylaxis.
