What should you know about facial MRI scan?

Facial MRI can distinguish muscles, glands, nerves, blood vessels and other soft tissues around the eyes, nose, mouth and jaw. It may be used to investigate swelling, a lump, persistent pain, altered sensation or an uncertain finding from another examination. Contrast may be offered when it would improve the view of a particular tissue. The report supports clinical decision-making; an image cannot alone prove that a finding is cancer.

You will hear loud repeated sounds and must remain still. The scanner is open at both ends, but the space can feel close. Hearing protection and a communication button are available.

Tell the imaging team about pacemakers, implants, metal fragments, kidney disease, previous contrast reactions, pregnancy or claustrophobia. Remove metal items and follow any instructions about meals or medicines. Wear comfortable clothing without metal fasteners. If you feel anxious, discuss this before the appointment so the team can explain the process and consider suitable support.

Seek clinical advice about a persistent facial lump, unexplained numbness, swelling, pain, vision change or difficulty moving part of the face. Get urgent help for sudden facial drooping, new weakness, speech difficulty, sudden loss of vision, or swelling that affects breathing or swallowing. Do not wait for routine imaging when symptoms are sudden or severe.

Ask which facial structures need imaging, whether contrast is appropriate, how you will receive the report, what happens if the scan is unclear, and whether a biopsy or another scan may follow.
