Facial hair bald spots: what to know

A smooth, sharply outlined patch in the beard or moustache area may fit alopecia areata, an immune-related condition that can affect hair follicles. Scaling, redness, broken hairs, tenderness, or crusting can point toward a skin infection such as ringworm. Repeated rubbing, plucking, tight facial coverings, or inflamed skin can also disturb growth. Notice whether the patch is expanding, whether the skin feels smooth or scaly, and whether scalp or eyebrow hair is changing too.

Take a clear photograph in the same light and avoid shaving closely, plucking, or applying irritating products until the area is assessed. A clinician may inspect the skin and hairs, ask about recent illness, medicines, grooming, and family history, and sometimes test for infection. Treatment depends on the finding; options may include treating an infection, calming inflammation, or observing regrowth. Do not share combs, razors, or towels if the patch is scaly or itchy.

Arrange a dermatology assessment if the patch is enlarging, new patches appear, or the skin is painful, swollen, oozing, or crusted. Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly spreading redness, marked tenderness, or swelling near the eye. Earlier review is useful when scarring, smooth shiny skin, or loss of eyebrow hair develops because some causes need timely treatment to protect follicles.
