Eye strain and light sensitivity: what to know

Short answer
Eye strain can make bright light uncomfortable, but persistent or severe light sensitivity may have another eye or neurological cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common triggers
- Glare, prolonged screen use, dryness, and close focusing
- Record for your visit
- Timing, triggers, pain, redness, and any vision change
What the combination can mean
Long screen sessions, glare, dry eyes, an outdated prescription, or focusing for close work can leave the eyes tired. The discomfort may feel like burning, aching, blurred vision, or a need to squint. Light sensitivity is also a presentation of migraine, and eye inflammation or conjunctivitis can make light unpleasant. A rare but urgent cause is meningitis, especially when light sensitivity occurs with fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, confusion, or marked illness. Light sensitivity by itself does not identify its cause.
What you can do now
Take regular distance breaks during screen work, reduce glare, adjust brightness to a comfortable level, and keep text at a readable size. Blink often and avoid directing a fan or air conditioner at your eyes. Lubricating eye drops may help some people with dryness; ask a pharmacist which type suits you. Sunglasses can help briefly outdoors, but wearing dark lenses indoors for long periods may make ordinary light harder to tolerate. Arrange an eye or primary-care assessment if symptoms keep returning, affect work, or do not settle with rest.
When to seek care
Seek urgent care for sudden vision loss, severe eye pain, a red eye with pronounced light sensitivity, a new severe headache, weakness, confusion, fever, or neck stiffness. Prompt assessment is also sensible after an eye injury or chemical exposure. A clinician can check vision, the eye surface, inflammation, and neurological symptoms to guide next steps.
Questions for your doctor
Could dryness, a prescription problem, migraine, or inflammation explain my symptoms? Should I have an eye examination? What changes would mean I need urgent review?
