Extreme hair loss reasons: what to know

Short answer
Extreme hair loss can follow a disrupted growth cycle, inherited pattern, autoimmune patch, scalp infection, repeated pulling, or another health problem.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Key clue
- Diffuse shedding, patchy loss, or gradual thinning
- Useful evidence
- Timing, scalp symptoms, family history, and medication list
Common patterns and reasons
Diffuse shedding across the scalp can follow fever, surgery, major stress, childbirth, restrictive eating, or some medicines; Telogen Effluvium is one example. Gradual thinning over the part or temples may reflect Female Pattern Hair Loss or Male Pattern Hair Loss. A smooth, sharply defined patch can occur with Alopecia Areata.
Scale, broken hairs, swelling, or tender areas can point toward Scalp Ringworm or another scalp problem. Repeated tight braids, extensions, or pulled-back styles may cause Traction Alopecia. The appearance, speed of change, scalp condition, family history, and recent health events help separate these possibilities. Hair shedding is a symptom, not a diagnosis, so the symptom alone cannot identify its cause.
How to prepare for an assessment
Note when the change began, whether it is diffuse or patchy, and whether hairs are falling from the root or breaking along the shaft. Photograph the hairline and part in consistent lighting. Use gentle products, avoid tight tension and harsh chemical processing, and eat regular balanced meals. A clinician may examine the scalp, review health events and medicines, and consider tests for iron, thyroid function, or other concerns when the history supports them.
When to seek care
Arrange a dermatology review for rapid progression, bald patches, scarring-looking skin, persistent itch, heavy scale, pain, pus, or bleeding. Seek prompt help for a spreading infection or fever with a painful scalp. Earlier assessment is also sensible when loss follows a new medicine or comes with fatigue, weight change, weakness, or other new symptoms.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which pattern your examination suggests, whether testing is useful, and what hair-care changes can reduce breakage. Ask what treatment is suitable for your health history and how progress will be judged.

Questions people ask
Can one person have more than one reason for hair loss?
Yes. A temporary shedding episode can occur alongside inherited thinning or damage from repeated pulling, so the pattern may need careful examination.
Is scalp appearance relevant?
Yes. Scale, redness, tenderness, broken hairs, or smooth patches can change which causes a clinician considers.
