The combined pill uses two hormones. Ethinylestradiol is an oestrogen, while levonorgestrel is a progestogen. Together they mainly stop ovulation, thicken cervical mucus, and change the womb lining. Different brands can contain different hormone doses or schedules, so the pack instructions matter.

Some people use the pill for contraception, while a clinician may also prescribe it to make periods more predictable or reduce period pain. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. Medical history matters because migraine with aura, previous blood clots, smoking, high blood pressure, and some medicines can affect whether it is suitable.

Take each active tablet at the same time each day and follow the pack leaflet for missed tablets, vomiting, or severe diarrhoea. Ask a pharmacist to check interactions with regular medicines or supplements. If you want to start, switch, or stop the pill, discuss timing and backup contraception with a clinician. Report troublesome bleeding or persistent side effects rather than changing the schedule yourself.

Get urgent help for sudden chest pain, difficulty breathing, coughing blood, a painful swollen leg, sudden weakness, or a severe unusual headache or vision change. These symptoms can indicate a serious problem and should not be managed by waiting for the next appointment.
