What should you know about EVALI chest X-ray?

EVALI means a vaping-associated lung injury. A chest X-ray may show hazy or patchy changes in the lungs, sometimes affecting more than one area. These findings are not unique to EVALI: pneumonia and other lung problems can look similar. A clinician will ask about vaping or inhaled product use, cough, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, fever, nausea or vomiting, and how quickly symptoms developed. A normal early image does not always settle the question if symptoms are concerning.

Arrange prompt medical assessment if breathing symptoms follow vaping or inhaling oils, concentrates or other substances. Do not vape while you are unwell, and bring the product name or packaging if available. A GP Consultation can review your history and examine your breathing. Depending on the findings, the team may arrange a Chest X-Ray, oxygen measurement, blood tests or further imaging. Do not restart vaping to test whether symptoms return.

Seek emergency help for severe or worsening breathlessness, bluish lips, confusion, fainting, inability to stay awake, or chest pain that is severe or persistent. Urgent assessment is also needed when breathing becomes difficult at rest or symptoms worsen rapidly. Do not drive yourself if you are struggling to breathe.

Ask what the image shows, whether infection such as Pneumonia needs consideration, and whether you need repeat imaging or specialist review. If tuberculosis is a concern, ask whether Tuberculosis Screening is appropriate and how it differs from a chest X-ray.
