What should you know about eruptive milia?

Milia are small, firm, pearly white or skin-coloured cysts just beneath the surface. They commonly occur around the eyes, cheeks, or other areas of the face, and they often do not hurt. An eruptive pattern means many appear together or over a short period. They are not the same as acne whiteheads, even though both can look pale. A clinician can distinguish milia from other skin bumps by examining their shape, depth, and surrounding skin.

Wash gently, use non-comedogenic moisturiser, and avoid needles, squeezing, or gritty scrubs. These actions can injure delicate skin and leave marks. If the cysts persist or bother you, a clinician may discuss topical retinoids or a procedure such as curettage and cautery. Treatment around the eyelids needs particular care, and products should not enter the eyes. Keep a simple record of new lesions and any product that seems to trigger irritation.

Arrange review if the bumps become red, tender, crusted, or rapidly more widespread, or if they affect vision or the eyelid margin. Seek advice when the appearance is uncertain, since acne, irritation, and other cysts can resemble milia. Prompt assessment is also sensible when a new eruption follows a medication, procedure, or significant skin inflammation.
